The project I am showing for ICM Final was created for the Hypercinema class. I teamed up with Pien to do this project. Our initial idea was to make a virtual + physical Cornell box.

We are inspired by the mix of materials like glass, clay, and textiles, and we like the crafty combination of these materials.

Pien and I were thinking of a box containing symbolic objects, like geometric shapes, and patterns so we could reach this tale-ish and mysterious feeling.

We start by looking at the very classic symbolizations— tarot card art.

We chose to focus on the card “The Magician” because in the magician card, there are symbols of all four suits of tarot cards which are “sword”, ”cup”, ”wand”, and” pentacle”, which makes the minor arcana cards which ordered from ‘ace’, 2 to 10 of these suits, and ‘page’, ‘knight’, ‘queen’, ‘king’ of these suits.

The Magician tarot card is a wonderful card to get in your reading! It’s all about manifesting your dreams and creating the life that you want for yourself. The Magician is also about new beginnings, and he has the skills and talents to create the world exactly how he wants it.

Rather than just taking a leap of faith, The Magician reminds you that you have what it takes to succeed, but you need to be proactive and engage your power. He encourages you to use your intellect, talents, and skills to manifest your dreams, rather than just waiting (or hoping) for them to come true.

We chose this card because it creates a good structure for object collection since it gives a reference to categories of symbolic items. We want to do this from the perspective of this person “the magician”’s collection of these symbolic items, as well as an interactive tarot reading installation.

The box is designed to be a four-compartment shelf, each containing a 3D model projection of the four elements on the table - Cup (Emotions); Wand (Will); Sword (Intellect); Coin (Physicality). The decoration of the physical box will be other symbols appearing on the card - a horizontal “8”, a snake, red roses and white lilies. Along will be some star shapes.
